Randy's Demo Video Clip
From an early age I can remember hearing my dad playing drums in our house.  I must have been about 7
years old. By the time I was 10, I was hooked. I started banging around on the drums and whatever else I
could get my hands on.  By 11 my dad walked into the room and said if you want to do this you better let me
help you, so he started to teach me everyday after school, starting with all the basic rudiments, Jazz and
Latin beats, until he taught me everything he knew. By 12 years old I was playing in the jazz band at Valhalla
Elementary School in Pleasant Hill, Ca.  I was doing quite well, but reading the notes on all those pages was
a whole other story. My dad soon found me an amazing drummer and instructor in Oakland, CA by the name
of Gene Akamoto. He taught me how to read as well as how to play in many styles including rock, Brazilian,
funk and Afro/Cuban.  By age 13, I was playing professional jazz gigs with my dad and other high school kids
from around the bay area. My next instructor was Paul Yanamura, from which I learned a bit more about
soloing and big band rhythms. After that I was playing in many different groups and was sitting in with many
of my hero musicians from the bay area. At age 20, I finally met the legendary Escovedo family out of
Oakland CA. I soon began playing drums for Peter Michael Escovedo, members of Tower of Power,
Santana and many other talented groups from around the bay area. Over the last 15 years, I've devoted my
time to teaching the drums, working with drummers beginner to pro who just want to further their musical
education.  Developing the studio these past 4 years has been huge blessing for me.
